The imagery of blossoming plum trees echoes the artwork’s focus on delicate beauty and transience — a core principle of Japanese visual culture.

The composition is built around silver and red tones enriched with subtle gold accents, creating a quiet dialogue between movement and stillness.

Inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics and seasonal symbolism, the artwork reflects themes of connection, intimacy, and the fleeting nature of beauty. The layered surface and glossy finish allow the painting to change subtly with light, revealing new details from different angles.

Designed as a statement piece, this large gold painting becomes a focal point on large walls and contemporary interiors.

J466 — Magpie, Plum Blossoms and the Resting Cat

This large vertical composition unfolds like a quiet scene from a visual poem.

An ancient branch of mei hua — the plum blossom that blooms at the threshold of spring — stretches upward across a luminous silver background. The branch is covered with vibrant red blossoms, a symbol long associated in East Asian art with endurance, renewal, and the promise of life returning after winter.

Perched on the branch is a single Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, its body poised in attentive stillness. In traditional symbolism, magpies are messengers of good fortune and joyful encounters. Here the bird does not take flight but observes.

Below, almost hidden within the calm of the composition, a ginger cat lies resting on the ground. The magpie’s gaze falls directly upon it, creating a subtle narrative tension: curiosity without movement, awareness without disturbance. The two figures share the same quiet space while remaining entirely within their own worlds.

Behind the branch rises a soft golden sun, its circular form diffused against the silver field. The contrast between gold and silver creates a luminous atmosphere that shifts gently with the surrounding light of the room.

A handwritten haiku accompanies the scene, transforming the painting into a moment of contemplative pause — a visual meditation on attention, stillness, and the unnoticed relationships that exist in nature.

The vertical format emphasizes the upward movement of the blossoming branch. The reflective metallic background interacts with ambient light, giving the artwork a subtle change of tone throughout the day.

As with all paintings in the artist’s Japanese-inspired series, the work is created by hand on a large canvas and carries its own unique number.
